The Africa Adaptation Initiative (AAI) was hosting a pivotal forum at the Tour Hassan Palace Hotel. This event marked the launch of the Adaptation Project Incubator for Africa (APIA), an initiative by the Africa Adaptation Initiative (AAI) and the Africa Agriculture Adaptation (AAA) Foundation, dedicated to addressing the unique climate adaptation challenges faced by African nations.
The African continent is home to 26 Green Climate Fund (GCF) and Adaptation Fund (AF) accredited entities, including 14 GCF Direct Access Entities (DAEs) and 4 AF National Implementing Entities (NIEs). Despite these impressive numbers, African DAEs have only secured around 6% of the total GCF project funding, underscoring a significant disparity between available financial resources and the urgent needs outlined in national climate policies.
This workshop brought together representatives from the GCF, National Designated Authorities (NDAs), and DAEs to:
1. Introduce APIA and its significance in enhancing climate adaptation efforts in Africa.
2. Discuss the objectives, strategies, and anticipated outcomes of APIA.
3. Foster collaboration opportunities and support mechanisms for APIA.
4. Identify key areas of cooperation between APIA and existing climate finance initiatives.
5. Establish a framework for ongoing communication and coordination among all stakeholders.
Attendees included key stakeholders from the GCF, AAI, UCLGA, government officials, international organizations, civil society representatives, and academia. This collaborative effort was and is still crucial in developing well-structured projects that facilitate access to climate funds, thereby ensuring that African countries, despite being among the lowest greenhouse gas emitters, can effectively combat the disproportionate impact of extreme climate events.
